China Successfully Launched The 28th And 29th Beidou Navigation Satellites
Mar 09, 2018

On February 12, China successfully launched the 28th and 29th Beidou navigation satellites in the “One Arrow Double Star” method using the Long March III B launch vehicle at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center (and the expedition No. 1 upper stage). The launch was the third global satellite launch of the Beidou III project, marking the further enhancement of the satellite navigation services provided by the Beidou satellite navigation system for global civil aviation.

The "Several Opinions of the State Council on Promoting the Development of the Civil Aviation Industry" clearly stated that it is necessary to promote the application of the Beidou satellite system in the civil aviation field. The CAAC has always attached great importance to the promotion of Beidou's international standardization and civil aviation applications and has achieved fruitful results. As of now, the Beidou No. 2 system has completed 89.7% of the international civil aviation standardization work. The Beidou No. 3 system's international standardization work has also officially started and is planned to be completed by 2020. At the ICAO navigation system expert group meeting held in October 2017, the Beidou satellite-based augmentation system obtained the ICAO identity mark, which laid the foundation for the follow-up of the Beidou system.

In the field of civil aircraft applications, on October 14, 2017, the Beidou satellite navigation system completed its test flight on the domestic regional jet ARJ21-700 for the first time, officially opening the prelude to the application of domestic satellite navigation systems in domestic civilian passenger planes. In the field of general aviation, the Aerospace Academy, the Air Traffic Management Bureau Telecom Company and related companies have carried out tests on the Beidou system application tests of different aircraft types at general airports in many places.

According to the person in charge of the Air Traffic Management Office of the Civil Aviation Administration, the CAAC will also accelerate the application of the Beidou satellite navigation system in transportation and general aviation. At the same time, the CAAC will also cooperate with the China Satellite Navigation System Office and other units in the subsequent follow-up operations of the Beidou and its enhancement systems and civil aviation applications.
